Reflection on SETT
I understand now, how the SETT (Student, Environment, Tasks and Tools) framework is used for evaluating a student’s specific assistive technology needs,
I also have a better understanding of how SETT would be used by the IEP team, in collaboration with parents and the student, as a standard process, rather than collecting varying opinions. We can use the process to clearly identify the student’s current abilities and challenges in the classroom setting, then evaluate the tool features that would be best suited to help the student complete tasks. I feel that it is important that the process is highly personalised, identifying tool ‘features’, rather than simply identifying a generic tool that may or may not work for the student.
As an EA, being aware of frameworks like this is an asset. It will help me be more conscious of evaluating student needs and I can play an active role in the SETT/IEP process.

Reflection on Kurzweil 3000
I chose the Kurzweil 3000 tool because I knew very little about it. I discovered that the Peel District School Board (PDSB) offers access for all students to Kurzweil 3000 and its web based Firefly application, so I know it will be useful for me to be very familiar with it. I downloaded the trial version of Kurzweil 3000 and used the PDSB Tutorial document to run through all the applications.
I would recommend Kurzweil because of its versatility. It is aimed at Grades K through 12, so it can grow with the student, and supports reading, writing and study strategies in a single tool. This minimises frustration and leads to greater independence and self-motivation, which in turn leads to greater self-esteem and student success. Additionally, Firefly is available as a web-based service or downloadable app, so the tool is available from any location, not restricted to a single computer!
